Writer's Inc
This is the most extensive life-saving guide to all things thinking and writing. That's only a slight exaggeration. While it could be a bit more interesting, it provides helpful tips and instructions to write better... essays, primarily. Unfortunately, essays are a fact of life in most academic scenarios. |
Writer To Writer: From Think to Ink
This is the resource for fiction writing (well, one of them). It's been a while since I read it, but anything Gail Carson Levine is simply delightful, and this encouraging guide couldn't be an exception to that rule. |
Writing Fiction for Dummies
This is the ultimate, hardcore how-to guide for those who want to not only write, but also publish fiction. It contains very detailed explanations of everything from character to plot to marketing. |
How to Read Literature Like A Professor
This is a new find for me. Thankfully I ran into it in the teen section of my library, and was excited to see what tools it could give me. All I can say is wow. And that I wished I had read it before taking Intro to British Literature. If you want to study literature, this is totally the book for you. It could also be helpful for writing fiction, but significantly less so than the books I listed above, because it's deep into the devices used in literary works. |
Mere Christianity
A philosophical discussion on human nature and Christianity, I find this my favorite C.S. Lewis work of all. It isn't academic, but rather appeals to reason, logic, and common sense to bring about vivid and somewhat unexpected conclusions that make perfect sense, as if they were there all along in our subconscious minds. |
Do Hard Things
I love this book. The idea of teenagers being more than the stereotypical lack of dedication is something I strongly agree with. |
